
Statistically, 13000 US women suffer from cervical cancer yearly with 4100 annual deaths. This is said to be lower in African-American women. It will also be lower in African women because of the cultural and moral teachings on sexual intercourse.
Cervical cancer remains a common cause of cancer and causes death in women living in developing countries. However, there are high chances of cure if detected early.
CAUSES OF CERVICAL CANCER
Although human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with cancer, only high-risk ones are associated with cervical and penis cancer. HPV is gotten through sexual contact or skin-to-skin contact.
More so, early sexual contact and having many sexual partners cause cervical cancer. Likewise, smoking and taking of birth control pills are proven causes of cervical cancer.
SYMPTOMS
- Bleeding after going through menopause
- Pelvic pain
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Increase vaginal discharge and
- Pain during sex
TREATMENT OPTIONS
NOTE: Treatment for cervical cancer is quite different for the ones used for cancers that begin in other parts of the uterus.
The ones below are treatments for cervical cancer
- Surgery
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
However, there is a vaccine to prevent HPV infections that are associated with cancer. Since HPV is part of the causes of cervical cancer, the vaccine indirectly prevents cervical cancer.
The combination of early and continues sexual intercourse can interact to increase the risk of cervical cancer in USA women. But early sexual intercourse and pregnancy before age 17 can heighten the chances of suffering cervical cancer in Nigerian women. source
